Mount Kenya is the second tallest mountain in Africa measuring a
staggering 5,199 metres (17,057 ft) at its highest peak. It is a
stratovolcano which was created approximately 3 million years ago
and glaciers
have caused it to have steep eroded slopes thus making
it a challenging
trek. The mountain is centrally located in Kenya’s
National Park and is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The mountain is home to an extremely varied array of plants and
animals,
something which can be experienced first hand. Due to changes
in altitude,
geology, scope and exposure, plants and animals thrive in certain conditions
and there are therefore many changes as one escalates.
Different ethnic groups live around the mountain and see it as an important
physical and metaphorical natural wonder. The Gĩkũyũ people believe that God
lived on Mount Kenya when he came down from the sky. Similarly, the Embu people believe God lived on the mountain and that it is therefore sacred. The Maasai and Ameru people use the mountain for cattle grazing and growing vegetation thus representing the importance of the physicality of the mountain and how it is crucial to survival.

"Trekking in Nepal is something that I always wanted to do. The ICT trek was for me the perfect opportunity to do it for a purpose. It was well pitched - ie not too challenging, not too easy, and doing it in a group of diverse but like-minded people makes it even more interesting."
